Danko’s multi-colored platter with bumps is a visually stunning piece. The pop of the red and orange amidst the sea of blue elevates the plate from a simple dish to a piece of artwork. Because of the way Danko creates his pieces, bisque-fired at a low temperature and then glaze-fired at a higher temperature, the plate remains a fully functioning and durable dish despite its beautiful colors and design. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Danko’s grandmother was a potter and inspired him to start working with ceramics at a young age. After attending an art academy in the 1990’s, Danko traveled to Prague. There, he was fascinated by the designs and colors artists were using, and when he returned to Bulgaria, he began making pottery with bold, colorful designs.Â
The markings and designs on his pieces are drawn from those on the antique Bulgarian furniture and pottery he recalls from his childhood. His work melds an old world form with contemporary styling, resulting in objects which are expressive, whimsical and truly unique. Every piece is individually formed and painted and includes the artist’s stamp.
