This stunning UNION SEMINARY CROSS by McHarp is based on a cross designed for Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, NC and is a small replica of that ten-foot cross on the campus of the Union Presbyterian seminary in front of the seminary building.
The knotwork designs were inspired by those on ancient stone crosses that can be found in Scotland, Ireland, and in the famous “Book of Kells”. The knotwork represents our entanglements in the world and we are encouraged to release our entanglements to become one with God. The top large panel is Jesus giving Holy Communion with a cup of wine and a loaf of bread. The lower panel is the baptism of Jesus with John the Baptist pointing to God in Heaven, and the dove, symbol of the love and peace of God.
